Rules and categories

TECHNICAL DETAILS OF PHOTOS: JPEG / Photo must be MINIMUM 3000 pixels the longer edge (300DPI) / Maximum size of one photo is 4MB / Photo must have EXIF, except if it’s analog which is necessary to emphasize / Photographs must not have watermark

NOTE: Editing instructions are just guidelines, since the Jury retains full autonomy in their decision-making and in setting the limits of photo editing. If a photograph is selected the Jury will request the original file for review. Should the photographer fail to provide the original file the Organizer may withdraw the award and amend the list of finalists, by replacing the disputed photograph with the next best rated photograph outside those selected.

CATEGORIES DESCRIPTIONS

Creative photography

This category allows the author to demonstrate creativity and present ideas they were not able to demonstrate by using the above categories. This category may include elements of any photographic genre with an emphasized visual artistry aspect. The range of motives is not limited and a special emphasis is placed on the originality of the technical solution and innovative composition.

Photographs must be taken in either 2016 or 2017. Please review the time and date information in the EXIF.

There are no editing restrictions.

Cultural Heritage

Material cultural heritage includes: monuments, groups of buildings (isolated or connected groups of buildings of immense historical, artistic or scientific value), famous sites (manmade heritage or a combination of manmade and natural heritage, as well as areas, including archaeological sites of outstanding universal value).

Non-material cultural heritage includes: performing arts (traditional music and dances, folk plays, folk theater, etc.), social customs, rituals, folk feasts and celebrations as well as traditional crafts.

Everyday life

The objective of this category is to portray everyday life. The category refers to all scenes, customs and events that in the most vibrant manner portray people’s everyday events and their lives.

Fashion

This includes all photos that relate to the presentation of a style, fashion, objects, products, people and etc.

Includes all photos taken by mobile phones.

Nature and environment

This category includes all photos of landscapes, animals, plants and natural processes. It is permitted to include buildings and people that, with their purpose and position, fit into the landscape but do not dominate the photograph. This category also includes photos that, through their aesthetics and the underlying message, emphasize the issue of protection and preservation of the natural environment.

The following photo enhancements are allowed: cropping, changes of contrast and exposure, color correction, desaturation, HDR, blending two or three frames in one but from same place and the same time frame.

It is not permitted to import elements from other photographs, or same scene on another day,or use any other technique not mentioned in the list of permitted interventions.

News and events

The objective of this category is to present an informative and documentary value of a photograph. The category includes all photos of events, news portraits, action, sports, photos with a social message, and photos that were taken for the purpose of illustrating media content. A photograph in this category should include a brief description, and it is very important that through movement and composition the photograph sends a message about the event for which it was taken.

Wedding photography

Includes photographs taken by an official photographer at a wedding, such as portraits of the bride and groom or any interesting moments during the wedding. The photographs must be taken on the actual wedding day. Please note that photographs taken during styled photo shoots and workshops will not be accepted.

Photographs must be taken in 2017. Please double check the date and time in your EXIF info.

Allowed photo editing includes cropping, contrast and brightness adjustment, color correction, desaturation, minor retouching, dodge and burn tools, brushes.

It is not permitted to introduce elements from other photographs.

Photostories

This category values the strength of a series of photographs that constitute a story/essay and have a common thread and meaning. To qualify for this category it is necessary to submit 5-8 photos that fit together as a meaningful whole, and at least five lines of text describing the reportage.

The objective of this category is to capture the personality of a subject or to link them to an environment. The category includes portraits, people in an environment, people at work, everyday situations, life, studio portraits and the like.
